Migration Is Safer Than You Think
Switching hosts sounds scary — your URLs, SEO, and uptime are on the line. Done correctly, a migration has zero downtime and zero ranking impact. The trick is cloning before you cut over.
Step 1: Clone, Don't Move
Spin up your new host (SiteGround's free migrator or Hostinger's 1-click). The migrator copies files and database to the new server while your live site keeps serving traffic from the old one.
Step 2: Verify the Clone
Open the new site via the temporary URL your new host provides. Confirm pages render, forms work, and the database isn't truncated. Fix issues here — not after DNS flips.
Step 3: Update DNS
Point your domain's A record (or nameservers) to the new host. DNS propagation takes minutes to hours, but both servers keep serving during the window, so visitors hit one or the other seamlessly.
Step 4: Watch for Mixed Content
After the flip, check for mixed-content warnings and any hardcoded old URLs in the database — a quick search-and-replace handles them. Your sitemap stays identical, so search engines see no change in URL structure.
Step 5: Decommission the Old Account
Keep the old host for a week as insurance. Once you confirm traffic and rankings are stable, cancel it.
